Become a Pilot – Sooner Than You Think

Dreaming of becoming a pilot, but concerned about the time or cost involved? The Sport Pilot certificate may offer a faster, more affordable way to get into the cockpit.

Recent FAA changes known as MOSAIC have expanded Sport Pilot privileges and the types of aircraft eligible for Sport Pilot operations, making this training path a practical option for more aspiring pilots.

At Tennessee Flight Training, we’ll help you determine whether Sport Pilot is right for your goals and create a training plan to get you flying.

Why Consider Sport Pilot Training?

Sport Pilot is designed for people who want to experience the freedom of flight without necessarily needing all the privileges of a Private Pilot certificate.

A Lower Barrier to Becoming a Pilot

  • 20-hour FAA minimum: The minimum flight-training requirement is half that of a Private Pilot certificate.
  • Potentially lower overall cost: Fewer required hours can mean a more affordable path to earning your first pilot certificate.
  • Simplified medical requirements: Many Sport Pilots can use a valid U.S. driver’s license rather than obtaining a traditional FAA medical certificate.*
  • More aircraft options: MOSAIC has significantly expanded the range of aircraft that may qualify for Sport Pilot operations.
  • A certificate you can build on: Sport Pilot can be your destination or a first milestone on the way to a Private Pilot certificate and additional training.

*FAA eligibility requirements and operating limitations apply.

What Is MOSAIC?

MOSAIC is a major update to FAA rules governing Sport Pilots and Light-Sport Aircraft. Among the biggest changes, MOSAIC expands the types of aircraft qualified Sport Pilots may be able to fly and provides opportunities for additional privileges with the appropriate training and endorsements.

For aspiring pilots, the big takeaway is simple: Sport Pilot is now a more versatile and practical way to become a licensed pilot. And the FAA minimum to earn your Sport Pilot certificate remains just 20 hours of flight training.

Is Sport Pilot Right for You?

Sport Pilot may be a great fit if you want to:

  • Fly primarily for recreation and personal enjoyment
  • Take a friend or family member flying
  • Pursue a potentially faster, more affordable path to becoming a pilot
  • Earn a pilot certificate before deciding whether to pursue additional training
  • Start with Sport Pilot and potentially continue toward a Private Pilot certificate

Every pilot has different goals. If you’re planning to pursue advanced ratings or a professional aviation career, a Private Pilot certificate may be the better place to start. Not sure which path is right for you? That’s where we can help.

Start Here. Go as Far as You Want.

One of the advantages of the Sport Pilot pathway is that earning your first certificate doesn’t have to be the end of your training. You can earn your Sport Pilot certificate, enjoy the privileges you’ve worked for, and continue training when you’re ready. For pilots with bigger goals, that journey could eventually look like:

Sport Pilot → Private Pilot → Instrument → Commercial → CFI → Professional Pilot

Or you can simply enjoy being a Sport Pilot. The destination is up to you.

Your Journey Starts at Tennessee Flight Training
